Last year I had the opportunity to travel to Buenos Aires, AR to work with @scalablglobal (Scalabl) as an independent consultant. Scalabl is a company that assist in developing entrepreneurs and business startups worldwide. Within the Scalabl company, my team and I were tasked with assisting a group of physicians from the Digital Doctor team in developing marketing strategy to expand their products reach. Digital Doctor is a platform for physicians and patients to have electronic access to their medical records, prescriptions, and appointment scheduling. The aim of this app is to aid in the facilitation between physicians, administration staff, and patients in order to make interactions more efficient and cost effective. The larger goal of this project, is to contribute to the growing shift from paper records to electronic health record (EHR) that is currently taking place in Latin America.
«Going Digital» is still a relatively new phenomenon taking the place even here in the US. EHR systems have existed in the US for over 30 years, yet in 2006 fewer than 10% of hospitals utilized them. However, this number has since grown substantially and by 2013 78% of all physicians used some form of EHRs. Why the change? Many surveys have cited improved software, increased efficiency, and financial incentives as reasons for the increased adoption of EHRs by health care providers. However, from my own personal experience I would cite physician handwriting as leading agent of change to legible electronic health records. «Among inpatients with influenza, vaccination in the current and any previous season reduced the risk of severe outcomes (adjusted odds ratio 0.45, 95% CI 0.26-0.76).» Translation: if you got the flu vaccine in previous years and get the flu this year, your chance of ending up severely sick in the hospital drops by almost half.
Your flu vaccine this year protects you for next year even if it’s not a perfect match. I discussed this in more detail in my influenza blog, so check it out if you want to learn more. (Www.mydoctorfriend.wordpress.com)
